Program Spotlight: KidsPlay Day Camp 2024
For the fourth consecutive year, KidsPlay proudly hosted the KidsPlay Day Camp. This language-rich day camp is specifically designed for English language learners. The camp provided a vibrant environment for rising 1st and 2nd graders from Torrington Public Schools, offering unique opportunities for hands-on STEM learning, literacy-based imaginative play, and exploration of the community.
KidsPlay camp staff worked tirelessly to create an immersive experience where children could learn and grow through play. Staff designed the camp curriculum to help young learners improve their English language skills while fostering a love for discovery and creativity.
KidsPlay Day Camp: A Community-Oriented Camp
Collaboration with local partners played a key role in the camp’s success. Staff introduced campers to the rich cultural resources and institutions that make downtown Torrington a designated Cultural District. Highlights of the camp included:
- A ballet lesson at the Nutmeg Ballet Conservatory.
- An exploration of the Warner Theatre.
- An art tour at the Five Points Arts Gallery.
- Plenty of outdoor fun at the local playground!
Throughout the camp, children engaged in a variety of activities that combined education with entertainment. They crafted art projects, played in KidsPlay’s interactive exhibits, enjoyed storytime in the CFLC Library, and bonded over board games. Puppet shows and music-making sessions further enhanced the experience. These activities allowed campers to express themselves creatively in a supportive environment.
Reflecting on the camp, Joanne Creedon from Torrington Public Schools remarked, “What a delight! Fifteen little ones, all listening, speaking, playing, enjoying books, and doing fun things, under the wonderfully patient and energetic direction of KidsPlay staff. This is truly a model program!”
The KidsPlay Day Camp continues to be a great example of how community partnerships and creative programming can make a lasting impact on young learners. Programs like this help build confidence, language skills, and a sense of belonging.
