At KidsPlay, Letters Are Characters is more than just a literacy program—it’s a joyful, in-person learning community for parents and children to explore early reading skills together through play, imagination, and connection.
Designed for children in kindergarten and first grade, this program empowers caregivers to support their child’s reading journey while building a strong foundation for literacy success.
What to Expect:
- Weekly In-Person Sessions at KidsPlay, guided by trained facilitators who will lead families through playful literacy activities.
- Hands-On Materials, including a Letters Are Characters (Kindergarten) or Letters Are Builders (1st Grade) kit filled with letter dough, coloring pages, and tools for imaginative letter learning.
- Parent and Caregiver Support, including:
- Weekly video and instructional letter from Dr. Caroline Wilcox Ugurlu, creator of the program.
- Access to exclusive Letters Are Characters online resources.
- Gentle guidance on how children learn to read and how to make reading fun at home.
Why It Matters:
Research shows that a child’s knowledge of letter sounds by age six is the strongest predictor of future reading success. Letters Are Characters introduces these concepts in a fun, low-pressure way that nurtures both confidence and curiosity.
Our Approach:
- Play-Based: Kids explore sounds, shapes, and stories through hands-on, giggle-filled activities.
- Community-Focused: Parents and children learn together, fostering shared understanding and mutual joy.
Science-Informed: While kids play, adults gain insights into how reading skills develop and how they can help.
