KidsPlay’s 2025 Spring Appeal

KidsPlay Children’s Museum is so much more than just a fun destination for children. The Museum offers real-life, interactive learning that supports childhood development and fosters family connections. This is why our work is so important.

In today’s world, screens are everywhere. Young children spend an average of 4 to 6 hours daily on devices, and for older kids, that number doubles. While technology has its place, research indicates that hands-on play is essential for brain development, emotional resilience, and social connection.

KidsPlay is a space for learning through exploration, creativity, and play. Whether building in the Maker Space, experimenting with STEM concepts, or engaging in imaginative play in the Town Center, children experience active, joyful learning that screens cannot replicate. At KidsPlay, children develop problem-solving skills, executive function, and emotional confidence, all while having fun.

More than that, KidsPlay is a trusted third space for families. It fosters connections between children and caregivers through shared experiences, vocabulary-rich conversations, and meaningful moments. Parents have the opportunity to take a breath while kids thrive in a safe, inclusive environment.

KidsPlay’s work offers an additional benefit: it stimulates economic growth in Torrington. According to data from the AEP 6 economic impact study, KidsPlay generates $ 3.2 million in annual economic activity. Visitors don’t just visit the museum; they also shop, dine, and explore downtown.

Despite all this positive impact, KidsPlay is facing some serious challenges:

  • KidsPlay has received official notice that the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has cancelled KidsPlay’s three-year Museum for America grant. The notice stated:
“IMLS has determined that your grant is unfortunately no longer consistent with the agency’s priorities and no longer serves the interest of the United States and the IMLS Program. IMLS is repurposing its funding allocations in a new direction in furtherance of the President’s agenda.”
This grant supported the Hub@KidsPlay initiative, which connects families with essential early childhood resources. This news is disappointing and significantly impacts KidsPlay.
  • Economic uncertainty has also impacted some of our most dependable sources of unrestricted operating income. Some donors have already expressed that they may not sustain previous giving levels. These flexible funds are crucial for everyday expenses such as staffing, maintenance, and utilities.

Our work remains clear even as the funding landscape becomes more uncertain: to provide every child and caregiver access to hands-on, screen-free, real-world learning and joyful play.

You can help KidsPlay maintain affordable admissions, ensure that exhibits stay safe and engaging, and continue to contribute to the revitalization of downtown Torrington.

Thank you for believing in the power of in-person, hands-on play. Together, we can protect childhood, support learning, and strengthen our community.
