Early in my career as an early childhood educator, I had the great fortune of hearing Mem Fox read selections from her writing during one of her visits from her home in Australia. That experience shaped my approach to children, to reading aloud, and to selecting books to share. When I discover a book with Mem Fox as the author, I know I am about to enjoy another treasure.
Her advocacy for the importance of reading to children is reflected in her public appearances—over 100 in the United States! alone—as well as her writing The Magic of Reading: Why reading aloud to our children will change their lives forever. She stresses the importance of continuing to read to older children and how of children should be read three stories a day on their road to becoming readers.
Her choices of topics, endearing animals characters, use of rhyme and repetition, and gentle touches of humor add to the magic of her books. She tackles death in The Tiny Star, explores family love in Time for Bed, and humor in Boo to a Goose. Ten Little Fingers, Ten Little Toes has become my favorite gift to new parents. Whoever You Are, our May StoryWalk®, has become an important tool to help me teach that we are all more alike than different and how to replace fear with tolerance and compassion. Mem Fox is an award-winning prolific writer. Her books are enjoyed worldwide and translated into multiple languages.
If you are an old friend to her work, enjoy the month with Mem Fox. If you are discovering her for the first time, enjoy the titles we are sharing and look for her work at your local library. Expect them to be treasures!
