KidsPlay is excited to announce Mo Willems as our Author of the Month! Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus is our featured StoryWalk® in September!
Who is Mo Willems? If you are meeting him for the first time, you are in for a treat as you read with him and the pigeon on this month’s story walk. If he is an old author friend, the StoryWalk® will remind you that Knuffle Bunny, the pigeon, Elephant and Piggy are creations/characters that welcome children to the fun and interaction with books. His description of books and his respect for children are woven together with his creativity and multiple talents to make him such an exciting choice for our Author of the Month. He has won six Emmy Awards for his six years working with Sesame Street. He has been awarded three Caldecott Honor Awards. Being recognized by awards is important, but being enjoyed by children and families is even more valuable. He is a writer, animator, voice actor and works with print, television and films. However, share the StoryWalk® and a few of his books from the Literacy Tree House with your favorite little reader and ask him/her what they think!
A good fit for KidsPlay Children’s Museum? Yes! He encourages caregivers to draw with their kids. We are big on caregiver-child interaction. He was a writer for Sesame Street and Voice Actor. The written word and expression are part of our literacy emphasis. He loves to travel, and our museum loves to draw from different countries and traditions. At KidsPlay, we believe in modeling for children, and Mo Willems told NPR: “If you really want your kid to be artistic—to draw, and to be empathetic, and to be musical, you have to do those things. You have to be sitting there drawing. You have to be modeling this stuff.” So, have some fun with your child telling the pigeon, “No! You cannot drive the bus!”
