KidsPlay is excited to announce Lois Ehlert as our Author of the Month! Her story, Growing Vegetable Soup, is our featured July Story Walk. It is a bright-fully illustrated and warm-hearted tale that you and your family will love to read.
Lois Ehlert is both an author and illustrator of children's books, many of them relating to nature. Ehlert was born on November 9, 1934, and grew up painting and sculpting. Ehlert graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison with a degree in English and Psychology and then attended the Layton School of Art. After getting her degree, she worked as an apprentice in an art studio while working in the evenings on her own art.
Her favorite art technique is called collage -- the process of cutting out pieces of paper, fabric, or objects and gluing them to a backing. Ehlert’s book creation process begins with a “dummy book” made from pencil drawings. She then does background research on her topic and begins her artwork, which involves cutting out pieces individual pieces and gluing them on the pages of the book.
Ehlert is an award-winning author who is creative, bright, and playful. She was awarded the IRA Teachers' Choice and NCTE Notable Children's Trade Book in the Language Arts for Feathers for Lunch and received the American Library Association Notable Children's Book and Boston Globe – Horn Book Award for Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. We are very excited to honor such an awe-inspiring author this month at KidsPlay. Make sure to check out her fun website so you can learn more about Lois and her exciting books!
