Do you know what an engineer does? Christine Cunningham of Engineering is Elementary found that most children don’t know either! Many thought that engineers either drove trains or built roads and bridges. These children might be surprised to learn that each time they imagine, design, and build in their own lives, they are solving problems just like engineers do.
The National Academy of Sciences reports that although “our society depends upon engineers to design every aspect of our lives — where we live, what we drive, how we communicate and even what we eat...America’s primary and secondary education systems aren’t producing enough critical thinkers to keep up with the demand.” So what can we do to nurture the engineering design capabilities of our children?
For starters, we can let them build things from their imaginations. We can let them experiment with and explore different materials. We can give them space and time to create. We can let them work through failure and succeed through persistence and grit.
Our theme this month at KidsPlay is Design & Build. Please join us as we offer your children the opportunity to experience the roots of engineering.
