Story Walk: In the Small, Small Pond
Who is Denise Fleming? She is our Author of the Month for June. Her Caldecott Award winning book In a Small, Small Pond is our bright, delightful story walk. We are proud to introduce her to those of you who haven’t discovered her yet, and we trust that those of you who know her books will enjoy sharing them again as you visit KidsPlay this month.
Denise has written over 30 titles, each receiving awards and recommendations from multiple respected sources. She creates her books with a process of paper making, stenciling, and bright colors called “pulp painting.” Writing for preschoolers through second graders, her books feature the natural world, include clever adaptations of old classics like 5 Little Ducks, and incorporate bold colors and shapes in her inviting artwork.
Especially important, Denise uses verbs and adjectives to teach important action words and to expand descriptive vocabulary for children AND caregivers! Her pages are deceivingly simple, but they are rich in concepts and vocabulary. Children and adults usually love returning to her books often. I know I do!
In addition to enjoying our collection of Denise Fleming’s books at KidsPlay, I encourage you to check out your own library’s collection. You can also enjoy getting to know her on her engaging website. I was fascinated by her videos showing how she creates her amazing artwork and each page of her books. Those of you who love messy art (as I do) will love watching this with your children. I know I am excited to try a version of pulp painting and am thrilled that we are showcasing this respected author.
