Volunteer Spotlight

Friday morning Messy Art is a favorite program for many because of our warm and welcoming volunteer, Deborah Kellogg. She greets each child and caregiver with a warm smile and an enthusiastic invitation to create. Art is a passion for Deborah which she loves to share with others. She wants young artists to appreciate what they create and have it mean something to them. One of her favorite things about KidsPlay is how children have so many opportunities to be themselves and try new things without fear of being judged, “Everyone at KidsPlay is supportive – the staff, the children, the caregivers, and the community. It is a safe, happy, and positive environment where everyone feels extremely welcomed.”

Deborah and her late husband lived in many states, finally settling in Connecticut to raise their family. She currently resides in New Hartford. She has 5 children and 3 grandchildren. She always read to her children when they were growing up, and she now enjoys reading to her grandchildren. She encourages caregivers to “Read to kids all the time. Reading is so important!” For her own reading, she enjoys science fiction and historical novels. A few of her favorite books include The Book Thief, A Wrinkle in Time, and Orphan Train.

When her youngest child was in middle school, she completed a two year art program at Northwest Community College. One of her favorite forms of art is black and white photography. She is equally at home in the outdoors photographing nature and wildlife as she is in the quiet of the darkroom. She enjoys working in the abstract, capturing different lights and textures to invoke feeling in the viewer.

Deborah is a lifelong volunteer. She helped start the soccer program in New Hartford and was the president of the organization as well as a coach. Soccer is a love of hers - she even once played on a semi-pro team in Chicago! She owned several horses and used her knowledge to share her skills to assist with therapeutic riding at Shepard Meadow in Bristol. She has also served on the Board of Education. She currently teaches bible study classes and is a Eucharistic minister. She really has done it all! We are more than lucky to have her at KidsPlay!
