Author Study: Stan and Jan Berenstain

This month at KidsPlay we are celebrating Stanley Melvin and Janice Marian Berenstain as our Authors of the Month. Stan and Jan Berenstain were American writers and illustrators best known for creating the beloved children’s book series “The Berenstain Bears”

They were both born in 1923 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania during the time of The Great Depression. They met while attending the Philadelphia School of Industrial Arts. When they were first married, they worked as a magazine cartoonist team. They published their first Berenstain Bears story “The Big Honey Hunt” in 1962. They were inspired by the difficulties that parents face as well as some of their own childhood tribulations.

For generations families have shared the treasured stories of the Berenstain Bears and our hope is that you will continue to enjoy their humorous series that has stood the test of time.

Celebrating National Chemistry Week!

Come join KidsPlay on October 26 from 5:00 - 8:00 pm for an exciting evening of Spooky Science: Let’s do Chemistry. We are excited to be part of this nationwide festival of educational programs in conjunction with The National Informal STEM Education Network about ways to experiment, explore, and tackle challenges with chemistry. Chemistry is all around us - It’s in the air we breath, the food we eat, the clothes we wear, and much more. This evening will be filled with opportunities to discover, create, and problem-solve with chemistry. Participants can launch a mini rocket with a chemical reaction, create foggy bubbles with dry ice, solve a colorful mystery, make their own dye from bug parts, and much more.

In addition to the fascinating experiments located throughout the museum, it is a fun-filled night for families to enjoy the other wonderful exhibits and storytimes at KidsPlay. Experiments are appropriate for ages 5 and up, but all ages are welcome to play.
