What advice would you give to parents to help prepare their children for careers in the technology field?
In my personal opinion, I would consider TV-free living and scrutinize what your children do on the internet. Provide learning opportunities beyond the classroom, such as KidsPlay's Maker Space.
What skills can young children learn that will prepare them for jobs in STEM fields?
Hands on activities and exposure to STEM fields at a young age are critical in helping children envision these fields as viable options for their future. Many adults find their childhood experiences were instrumental in choosing a career. A surprising number of orthopaedic surgeons chose this field because they had an injury as a child or young adult and the treatment process motivated them to pursue medicine and orthopaedics as a career choice.
What lessons did you learn through play as a child that inspired you to start your business/create your product?
My father was a pediatrician and university professor who would sometimes take me to his hospital rounds and hospital clinic. I loved watching him teach and take care of his patients. Ultimately, that's how I decided to go to medical school.
What would you like to convey through your display at The Summer Fete?
We will have sample bones with fractures that the guests will be able to fix! This not only provides a glimpse into the process of modern fracture fixation, but also into the process of operating a drill and using a screw driver which requires dexterity and fine motor skills.
What would you like the guests of The Summer Fete to know about your company?
Arthrex manufactures various orthopaedic hardware for fracture fixation as well as soft tissue reconstruction. For orthopaedic surgeons, we cannot help our patients without these technologies.
