Author Study: Jan Brett

As a child Jan Brett spent hours reading and drawing with hopes of one day becoming an illustrator… she now has over forty million books in print! Her best-known titles include, The Mitten, The Hat, and Gingerbread Baby. This month come and explore Jan Brett’s fun, colorful, and detailed stories of both animal and human culture ranging from Scandinavian to African! Share stories with your favorite child, guided by the rich, intricate borders illustrations on almost every page.

What is an Artist?
December 7 @ 10:30 am

Join us as we welcome special guest, Judith McElhone, Executive Director of The Five Points Gallery. We are connecting with The Five Points Gallery and the University of Hartford Launchpad Program to provide children and caregivers the chance to be artists! Judy will share her knowledge, fun, and enthusiasm while exploring line and color. Also, we will learn more about The Five Points Gallery located right around the corner from KidsPlay!

Nutcracker Maker Space Challenge
December 9 & 10 starting at 11 am

Join us for a  Maker Space Challenge as our friends at the Warner Theatre and The Nutmeg Ballet prepare for a magical afternoon performance of the Nutcracker Ballet. On Saturday, we will be treated to a special Step into a Story with Humphry as he shares the story of the Nutcracker with us as only Humphry can do.

Make it, Take it, Gingerbread Houses
December 15 @ 4, 5, or 6 pm

Enjoy a creative, hands-on holiday tradition at KidsPlay! Our team will guide your family as you build and decorate your own unique Gingerbread House to take home. Please register for your preferred time of 4 pm, 5 pm, or 6 pm. Admission plus a $3 material fee per house. Space is limited, please register early by phone, online, or in person at the Museum.

World Celebrations
Winter Break - December 26 to December 30

Celebrations around the world have things in common. Each day during winter break  we will explore one special part of how people around the world celebrate. The week culminates with our annual New Year’s Eve Countdown to Noon!

Countdown to Noon

December 31 - 10 am to 2 pm

Our annual Countdown to Noon Balloon Drop has become one of KidsPlay’s favorite events of the year! Join us for activities, crafts, and noise makers for your kids to welcome in 2018 but without the late night. Balloons Drop at noon!

Let’s be Curious and explore the wonders of our amazing world with special guests and hands-on activities.

9:30 am Caregiver Circle
Meet, relax, and share while children engage in playful learning experiences in our program room.

10:30 am Kids on Stage
Hop on the Stage for dramatic play inspired by animals real and pretend!

Reading is important and fun! Early literacy support, 20 minutes sessions. Please preregister.

10:30 am Messy Art Studio
Using your imagination and our Big Idea of the Week, make messy creations using a variety of art mediums.

3 pm Tales with Humphry
Humphry loves to read! Do you? Books are magical adventures and the key to future reading success.

Saturdays

11 am Join us for Step into a Story or Tales with Humphry in the Literacy Treehouse Story Nest.
